The national policies of the states making up the old continent continue to shape Europe_quote_s future at the expense of #Europe as whole. The divisions among the countries are deepening, very often in a way that creates a crisis both internally and in a global context. The constant search of common narratives – as the basis for a common identity-based policy – seems to be increasingly difficult in the face of fragmented political spectrum and ever-more differing policy approaches in Europe. The purpose of the Forum is to provide space for young scientists to find what is common to all Europeans.

0:00 Welcome address\r
- Sebastian Schäffer, Managing Director of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe

Panel I “Europe as an area of peace and stability”

For a long time, Europe has been a symbol of peace and stability. After all, the European Union itself\rwas founded to keep the continent from repeating the horrors of the wars Europe experienced in\rthe first half of the twentieth century. However, the narrative of universal peace and stability may\rbe applicable to Western Europe but is untenable for Eastern and South-Eastern Europe given the\revents of the 1990s, as well as the current conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Moreover, peace is a matter\rof course for a young generation who has experienced neither war nor totalitarianism.

Chaired by Sebastian Schäffer, Managing Director, Institute for the Danube Region and Central\rEurope (IDM)

15:40 “Democracy: In Need of Relative Improvement”
- \rBabrik Kushwaha, University of Lille & Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau, France &\rGermany

47:00 “Visegrad 4 – Stability in the EU or tip the scales on the stability of the EU?”\r
- Stefan Lehrner, Andrássy University of Budapest, Hungary

1:20:26 “Everything in moderation? Developing Concepts and Strategies for an Inclusive and Participatory Europe (FIFUDEM)_quote_, with the support of the #Erasmus+ Programme of the #European Union, the Institute for the Danube Region and Central #Europe (IDM) has launched a new series, the _quote_IDM Democracy Talks_quote_, that is addressing current #democratic developments within and outside the European Union.

This edition will focus on the question of #Solidarity and the European idea. In spring, the outbreak of the global pandemic led to a reaction of solidarity within societies. The European Union worked to position itself and proposed an additional recovery fund “NextGenerationEU (NGEU)” to be coupled with the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

Nevertheless, we observe a move towards even more nationalistic forms of governance. Governments that previously gained their legitimacy from economic performance and low unemployment are now powerless when facing a global crisis. As a result, different approaches emerge. Some try to unite their people under the flag of solidarity, others under that of a common foe. Should this approach succeed, what effects will this have to other European countries? What message does it send to other vulnerable groups?

The #EU had to face difficult questions in the last decade regarding its direction and many answers remain disputed. Immigration, #Brexit, necessary institutional reform, just to name a few. Now all of it is overshadowed by #COVID-19. Economic recovery now takes priority above all else. Under the guise of this goal, some government grabbed extraordinary powers, passed controversial legislation and tightened their grip on power. All this begs the question, what will happen afterwards? Do we simply return to a state of normalcy? Do we go on as if nothing had happened? Can these changes and trends be stopped or reversed?

The new MFF and NGEU intends to unite Europe towards the common goal of a swift recovery. Yet it seems even this becomes a point of contention as the criteria of the rule of law sparks controversy and was subsequently vetoed by both Hungary and Poland.
Regardless of how successful an overall economic recovery will be, there are always going to be regional discrepancies. Will this crisis deepen European solidarity or divisions? Will we see a rekindling of the European idea or could it lead to further democratic backsliding?

During the General Assembly of the IDM on 24. November 2020, Erhard Busek discussed these questions with:

- Dr. Katrin BÖTTGER, Director Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP), Berlin

- Ambassador Rastislav KÁČER, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak
Republic to the Czech Republic

- Márton UGRÓSDY, Director of the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT), Budapest

0:00 Introduction - Dr. Erhard Busek
2:04 Dr. Katrin BÖTTGER
7:33 Ambassador Rastislav KÁČER
16:42 Márton UGRÓSDY
22:03 Discussion

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IDMVienna
Twitter: https://twitter.com/IDMVienna
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/idmvienna/
LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/idmvienna/
Visit our website: http://www.idm.at/
Newsletter: http://bit.ly/38uqaVK
https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos?id=wn1vyd3OMtA&part=id,snippet,contentDetails,statistics&key=AIzaSyAuacZl-IRz0fqVbaL1InRHT5Wnuj9Z7dI
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ar-Sp-YvgtY/default.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ar-Sp-YvgtY/mqdefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ar-Sp-YvgtY/hqdefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ar-Sp-YvgtY/sddefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ar-Sp-YvgtY/maxresdefault.jpg
IDM Vienna
In welcher Wechselwirkung #Religion und politische #Partizipation stehen, ist eine häufig gestellte Frage.
