A conversation with H.E. Stanica Anđić, Ambassador of Montenegro in Austria
Welcome: Ambassador Dr. Klaus Wölfer
Moderation: Sebastian Schäffer, IDM Director
An event organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Montenegro in Austria and the Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies.
Montenegro’s path toward the European Union has been shaped by a clear political choice and steady commitment. After voting for independence from Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, the country began its journey toward the EU by concluding a Stabilisation and Association Agreement, which entered into force on 1 May 2010. Montenegro formally applied for EU membership in December 2008, and accession negotiations have been under way since June 2012, making it the most advanced candidate country in the Western Balkans.
This talk will briefly explain how the accession process works and where Montenegro currently stands, before turning to the broader picture of what enlargement means in practice. It will focus on the positive changes EU membership can bring to Montenegro — from stronger institutions and legal certainty to economic opportunities and long-term stability — while also highlighting what Montenegro brings to the European Union. As a small but committed country, Montenegro contributes to regional stability, shares European values, and plays a constructive role in cooperation and security in Southeast Europe.
