New Study: Scenarios Following the Hungarian Parliamentary Elections
On 01 April 2026, IDM Research Associate Péter Techet and IDM Director Sebastian Schäffer presented the new IDM study exploring political scenarios following the Hungarian parliamentary elections.
The speakers outlined how different election outcomes, especially narrow or contested results, could shape the behavior of both the ruling party, Fidesz, and the opposition. A key focus was on the institutional and legal mechanisms that might be used to delay the certification of results or constrain a newly elected government. The presenters also discussed possible counter-strategies available to opposition parties, including legal challenges and political responses.
The session concluded with an open discussion, allowing participants to explore these scenarios further and ask questions about Hungary’s evolving political landscape.
A follow-up event will be held after the elections to assess the political situation and examine how it aligns with the scenarios outlined in the study.
