Péter Techet in HVG for European sovereignty

In the leading Hungarian weekly HVG, Péter Techet published an essay (a shortened version of his foreword to Joschka Fischer’s book) about the necessity of European sovereignty in global politics — both vis-à-vis Russia and the United States. According to Techet, the EU long failed to take seriously how dependent it had become on Washington and Moscow. While Moscow is now attacking a European country, Washington is supporting EU-hostile forces within European states — and Europe was unprepared for this situation.

Techet argues that the European unification project was conceived as an idea for a world “after the end of history.” But history has returned brutally; therefore, the EU must now more clearly distinguish between friends and enemies.
