Learning from the Past – Engaging for the Future | Intercultural Dialogue through the Danube Waves to the Black Sea Region

Online Conference

Conference organized by the IDM in cooperation with the Vienna School of International Studies, the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Istanbul and others

According to the UNESCO definition, cultural heritage includes – apart from monuments and collections of objects – also traditions and living expressions such as performing arts, social practices or festive events, inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants. In that sense, intangible cultural heritage embodies cultural diversity within a geographical region that can, if understood as such, foster intercultural dialogue. In the Danube region, intangible cultural heritage appears to be the wealth of knowledge and skills that is intergenerationally transmitted. The Danube region moreover seems to be a “musée imaginaire”, when referring to André Malraux, meaning that it is characterized by the heritage of Byzantinism, the competing Ottoman and Habsburg rule, imperialism, modernism, both World Wars, and finally the Iron Curtain, post-communism as well as the European integration.

As part of the EU project “Diversity in Unity: Intercultural Dialogue Through the Waves of Danube”, this conference aims to first reconstruct the dialogue among the material and intangible cultural heritage and thus foster intercultural understanding among EU-member and Non-EU-member states, including Turkey. Secondly, it aims to elaborate new inclusive European perspectives against the background of current contradictory EU integration and disintegration processes.
