A conversation with H.E. Stanica Anđić, Ambassador of Montenegro in Austria

Welcome: Ambassador Dr. Klaus Wölfer

Moderation: Sebastian Schäffer, IDM Director

An event organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Montenegro in Austria  and the Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies.

Montenegro’s path toward the European Union has been shaped by a clear political choice and sustained commitment. Following its vote for independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, the country embarked on its EU journey by concluding a Stabilisation and Association Agreement, which entered into force on 1 May 2010. Montenegro formally applied for EU membership in December 2008, and accession negotiations have been under way since June 2012, making it the most advanced candidate country in the Western Balkans.

This talk will explain how the EU accession process works and assess Montenegro’s current position, also in the context of the country’s domestic political situation and the broader geopolitical challenges in the Western Balkans. It will explore how well Montenegro is prepared for EU membership and consider how Montenegro’s accession could require, or help accelerate, institutional reform within the European Union itself.
