Life Along the Danube: Exploring the Diverse Riverbank Cultures
The Danube region is home to numerous countries, each with its unique culture and way of life. What do we know about them? What is life at their banks like? These questions served as the foundation for the exhibition „Life Along the Danube,“ a joint project of them IDM and VHS Landstraße, which was first presented in Vienna in June 2022 and can also be explored online.
This year, the exhibition was presented within the framework of the “70 years IDM – Locating the Future” in Ruse, Bulgaria in the International Elias Cannetti Society (IECS). On June 29, 2023, It was opened by Professor Penka Angelova, director of the IECS and Malwina Talik (IDM) one of the curators. During the event, Malwina Talik conveyed a warm welcome on behalf of the second curator, Mario Lackner (VHS).
The goal is to showcase the vast diversity and international character of the river and its surroundings. „Life Along the Danube“ offers more than just a glimpse into the beauty of the region. It serves as a springboard for conversations about the multifaceted aspects of life along the Danube. From leisure and tourism to biodiversity, agriculture, and trade, the exhibition sheds light on the river’s many facets. However, it also confronts the challenges faced by the Danube region, such as water scarcity, pollution, and the delicate balance between preserving nature and pursuing economic progress.
Following the vernissage, visitors had the opportunity to delve deeper into a different topic during a discussion with Malwina Talik. Professor Penka Angelova moderated and translated the conversation, which centered around the political transformation and developments in Poland after 1989.
