Since 1997, the Anton Gindely Prize for culture and history in Central, Eastern and South East Europe has been awarded by the Institute for the Donau Region and Central Europe (IDM). The award is given to those who have made exemplary contributions to the fields of cultural and historical understanding. The award also promotes linguistic, national and confessional diversity in the region and aims to spread understanding of the roots of the “New Europe.” The award succeeds the Anton Gindely Award for the History of the Danube Monarchy (1979 – 1991) and the Anton Gindely Award for the History of the Danube Monarchy and Central Europe (1992 – 1996).

The prize is named after the historian Anton Gindely (1829 – 1892). He was born to a German-Hungarian father and a Czech mother and served as a professor at the Charles University in Prague, was a member of the Academy of Science in Vienna, and as a history professor to the crown-prince Rudolf. Due to his supranational, and conciliatory views, he became a victim of the onslaught of the ultranationalists.

The € 7,200 award is given out by the Federal Minister of Science and Research. The chairman of the selection committee is presently Doctor Ernst Bruckmüller from the University of Vienna.
