The current issue of the academic journal of IDM, Der Donauraum features papers on transportation in Central Europe from a historical perspective. The editor of this issue, Gábor Zsigmond, Director General of the Hungarian National Museum, emphasizes in his introduction how this region, from Poland to the ports of the Adriatic and the Black Sea, increasingly grew together in the 19th and 20th centuries through new developments and cross-border cooperation.

This issue of 1/2025 presents papers on innovative transport policy as well as related developments and plans in 19th- and 20th-century Central Europe. Wolfgang Stritzinger’s article examines historical, economic, engineering, and ecological aspects, offering an analysis of the significance and development of the Danube as a transport route. Balázs Tinku-Szathmáry analyses the development of Danube connections at the beginning of the 20th century. Gábor Zsigmond describes how the former Danube Monarchy established trade relations with major international ports via the port of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea.
