On 1 June 2025, Poland will hold the second round of its presidential election between centrist Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and conservative politician and historian Karol Nawrocki. Trzaskowski, supported by the pro-European Civic Coalition, led the first round with 31.4%, narrowly ahead of Nawrocki’s 29.5%. Far-right candidate Sławomir Mentzen captured nearly 15% of the vote, making his supporters crucial for the runoff. Nawrocki has since signed a controversial pact embracing some of Mentzen’s nationalist positions in an effort to secure those votes. The election is widely seen as a turning point for Poland’s political direction, with choices that could either reinforce liberal reforms and EU cooperation or revive nationalist policies that may strain relations with Brussels. The result will also shape Poland’s role within NATO and its response to regional security challenges.
We will be discussing the election results and its outcomes on Monday, 2 June in our next IDMonSite session with Malwina Talik, IDM Research Associate and an expert on the transformation of post-communist regimes in Poland and other regions.
