On 18 May 2025, Romania will hold the second round of its presidential election: a run-off between far-right populist and Trump enthusiast George Simion and independent candidate Nicușor Dan, the current mayor of Bucharest. In the first round on 4 May, Simion emerged as the leader with around 41% of the vote, triggering the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. What implications will the outcome of this election have for the future of the Black Sea country – both for its internal politics as well as for Romania as an EU member and a key NATO country on the alliance’s eastern flank?

We will be discussing the election results on Monday, 19 May in our next IDMonSite session with Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, former Prime Minister, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Romania. He is Professor at the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest, Professorial Lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna and Project Leader of „Mechanisms of Modernization and Nation State Institutionalization in Central and Eastern Europe“ at IDM. The event will be moderated by Sebastian Schäffer, IDM Director.
