IDM Research Associate Sophia Beiter is one of the four new Fellows of the Charlemagne Prize Academy for 2024/25. In November, she participated in the Karlspreis Europa Summit in Aachen, which marked the official start of the fellowship. This year’s summit focused on the topic of freedom in research. Sophia Beiter also took part in the panel discussion “The morning after: post-election scenarios for EU-US relations,” organised in cooperation with Studio Europa Maastricht, and in the „Berlin Conference: Europe – A Cultural Project“. In Berlin, she also attended the Europe Speech, which was delivered by David McAllister, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament. Watch the Short Insights about the Europe Speech here.

During her fellowship, Sophia Beiter will work on the research question: „A comparative approach to different models of EU integration: How to achieve a citizen-based and reformed EU enlargement strategy?“, with IDM as hosting institution and Sebastian Schäffer as mentor. The project aims to develop a new, more effective, and citizen-oriented enlargement policy. This strategy will be both realistic and beneficial for accession candidates and EU members, incorporating the perspectives of citizens. By doing so, the project will not only contribute to a comprehensive proposal for EU reform but also promote public awareness of the importance of EU enlargement.
