Bulgaria is heading toward its seventh parliamentary election since 2021. After the last election in June 2024 failed to result in the successful formation of a regular government, Bulgarian citizens will return to the polls on 27 October 2024. The Black Sea nation remains deeply polarized between pro-European reformist movements and supporters of the status quo. Bulgaria continues to grapple with high inflation, widespread Russian disinformation, and persistent corruption. The repeated early elections have contributed to public disillusionment with politics, reflected in a voter turnout of less than 35%.

On 29 October at 10:30 CET, we will discuss the outcomes of the parliamentary elections and Bulgaria’s future. What is needed to break the political deadlock? How does the absence of a regular government impact Bulgaria’s role within the EU and its relationships with global partners? Is ongoing political instability a threat to the country’s democracy and governance? And how is this instability affecting the lives of its citizens and society as a whole?
