New Study: Scenarios Following the
Hungarian Parliamentary Elections
01 April 2026 16:00-17:30 CET
IDM Seminar Room, Hahngasse 6/Mezzanin/17, A-1090 Vienna and online
The Institute for Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM) has published a new study examining possible political scenarios following the Hungarian parliamentary elections. The analysis outlines potential developments after the vote, depending on which party emerges as the winner and by what margin.
At the core of the study is the question of which institutional and political tools the governing party Fidesz could use to delay the official certification of the election results or to obstruct the work of a new government. At the same time, the study presents possible counter-strategies available to the opposition parties, as well as their political and legal options for action.
Study presentation:
The study will be presented by the authors DDr. Péter Techet and Mag. Sebastian Schäffer.
Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for additional questions. Interview appointments can be arranged individually either in advance or afterward.
Main Thesis and Key Findings:
The study first outlines Hungary’s current political landscape, focusing on the consolidation of power by Fidesz, the emergence of the new challenger Péter Magyar, and significant changes to the electoral law. The core of the analysis explores which institutional, legal, and political scenarios are conceivable for the 2026 parliamentary elections. In particular, it examines:
- whether and under what conditions the losing party would recognize the election result;
- what legal mechanisms exist to delay the official certification and announcement of the results through appeals;
- and how the outgoing parliament, after the elections but before the new parliament is constituted, might limit the room for manoeuvre of a future government — especially in the event of an opposition victory.
