IDM Democracy Talks
Session 4:
Tackling nationalism, challenging certainties
Joint history text books as magic wands?

Date: 30 June 2021
at 13:00 (CEST)

Zoom-Webinar (Registration)

History and its most popular narratives often interact with the development of nation states. Dominant history narratives in any given country tend to exclude motives and perspectives of neighboring countries. Multi-national history books, like the Joint History Project (1999-2019) in Southeast Europe, or the recently published Polish-German Textbook seem to represent the solution to this problem, with joint editing of all sides involved. How are such books intended, and how are they being used? Can they contribute to system change, and why are there only so few?

A debate also beyond the European lens: examples from Europe, Korea and Brazil with:

Prof. Christina Koulouri
Professor in Modern and Contemporary History

Rector of the Panteion University of Political and Social Sciences Athens/Greece

Sofia Guimaraes von Ridder, Brazilian educator and schoolbook author, school founder and director, Grupo Positivo, Curitiba/Brazil

Prof. Igor Kąkolewski
Director of the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin

Moderation:
