IDMonSite – Grigorij Mesežnikov

Date/Time
April 22, 2020
15:00 - 16:00 CEST/CET

After a series of discourses from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, we return in our next IDMonSite live talk once again to our direct neighbourhood. Join us for another livestream, this time with Grigorij Mesežnikov, Political Scientist, President of the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) in Bratislava and Fellow of Europe’s Futures Program at the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM), Vienna.

Considered to be a political reload in Slovakia, the new government led by Igor Matovič, which took office in March 2020, could not have had a more difficult start to its anti-corruption campaign than amid a global pandemic. Although Slovakia is one of the least affected territories by COVID-19 disease compared to other European countries, severe national and subnational measures had to be taken, with several Roma communities – already having to live under deprived circumstances before – being recently quarantined.

How will the new government deal with the (socio-economic) consequences of the pandemic? Will it be able to deliver on its election promises and realize the changes that so many Slovaks expect? Can Matovič in the post-corona world implement his government programme including the social integration of marginalized Roma communities and the purification of state institutions?
