Since its foundation in 2004, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, better known as Frontex, became gradually a target for politicization by different political forces. In particular, Frontex-critical NGOs and networks of activists started to campaign against Frontex as a symbol for restrictive EU migration and border politics, be it regarding the Mediterranean, the “Balkan route” or Eastern Europe. The most recent wave of politicisation was due to the “pushback scandal”, involving an inquiry by the European Parliament and resulting into the resignation of the Frontex director in 2022. In his talk, Prof. Dr. Schneckener, will introduce the concept of politicisation and analyse the processes regarding border security by focusing on the NGO spectrum as well as on the counter-reactions. He will also address consequences and lessons different actors, at EU and national level, can draw from the politicisation.
