Final Conference and Vernissage: Act together, act now!

The project, supported by the Danube Small Project Fund for Culture (DSPF), aims to bring together conservationists and artists with a Danube focus. Strengthening cooperation between them across the borders of the three Danube countries of Austria, Hungary and Romania has the potential to combine rationality with emotion. It shows conservationists and artists dealing with the fate of the river and its ecosystems, explains how they use it and how they adapt to climatic and cultural challenges. By strengthening relationships between artistic and scientific activists, the project aims to create a space for mutual inspiration to think beyond the boundaries of their disciplines, methods and countries.
In this final conference, the results of the project will be presented. Hungarian journalist Anita Gócza travelled through all three countries to portray scientists and artists working on the Danube. Although they use different channels (photos, theatre, sound, etc.), she identified many similarities in their approach to the river. While one main goal is the preservation of these unique ecosystems, artists continuously document the status quo to counter oblivion. One of them, Christina Gruber, joins the discussion to give insights into her work and motivations.
Following the discussion, we are opening the exhibition “People of the Danube Delta” by the Romanian photographer Dragoș Lumpan. There are few people living in the Danube Delta: the population density is approximately 20 times lower than in the rest of Romania. Lumpan observed the inhabitants of the Delta, their lives and the environment, and documented them in unique photos.
