In the past weeks, Serbia has become the scene of massive protests calling for environmental justice. Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Belgrade and other cities and towns in response to recently passed laws by the government that paved the way for the Anglo-Australian mining corporation Rio Tinto to extract lithium in the Jadar Valley. Our trainee Chiara Maria Murgia (IDM) discusses with Stanislav Vučković, activist from EkoStaza – one of the civic organizations spearheading the protests, current events. Which implications does the Jadar project carry for the environment and the health of Serbian citizens? What else do demonstrators rally about? Are there any connections between the current protests and those that occurred in June?
