Developing Concepts and Strategies for an Inclusive and #Participatory Europe (FIFUDEM)_quote_, with the support of the #Erasmus+ Programme of the #European Union, the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM) has launched a new series, the _quote_IDM Democracy Talks_quote_, that is addressing current democratic developments within and outside the European Union.

In this second edition of IDM #Democracy Talks _quote_(Un)Civil Society in Europe_quote_ we are discussing civil society and civil society protest as two fundamental elements and principles of democracy. Democracy requires the citizens_quote_ possibility to express civil society protest for its functionality and legitimacy just as civil society organizations must be safe to exercise these rights.

However, various developments such as the uprisings in Belarus or the German PEGIDA protests show, that there are many different forms of protest today.

This episode of Democracy Talks will be taking a closer look on the paradox between protest being able to strengthen democratic values but also weakening them. A common saying tells, that a democracy must be able to withstand such dynamics - but is that really true? How much can a democratic system take, until dissolving effects kick in? Is it possible to think of a situation, when the democratic idea has reached a point of self-destruction? How might the civil society have changed over the past years? In this episode, we will address such questions and debate on today’s role of civil society and civil society protest.

All that makes it now evident, that the civil society can turn up in many different shapes, forms and varieties. This Democracy Talk session will be discussing, what the todays function of civil society is and what impact it can generate. Can we see a change over time or has it basically remained the same, just with different actors? It might also be worth addressing the symbiosis between political parties (or single actors) and civil society since it often might not be clear anymore who would influence whom. We will ask our guests on their thoughts and perspectives for the civil society protest and democracy in Europe and abroad.

Guests of the panel discussion, chaired by Florian Voss, are:

Natalie SATSUNKEVICH, human rights defender from Belarus, Viasna, Minsk
Besar LIKMETA, Editor in chief of BIRN network Albania, Tirana
Dr. Piotr KOCYBA, board member of the Institute for Social Movement, Berlin

More information on the #FIFUDEM Project led by IDM can be found here:
http://www.idm.at/projekte/laufende-projekte/item/fifudem

0:00 Introduction - Florian Voss
6:24 Dr. Piotr Kocyba
19:41 Natalie Satsunkevich
34:28 Besar Likmeta
47:53 What is to be expected in Belarus? - Natalie Satsunkevich
51:58 Personal role in the media in the age of Fakenews - Besar Likmeta
54:39 Development of Civil Society in the Future - Dr. Piotr Kocyba
55:13 Concluding remarks - Florian Voss

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IDMVienna
Twitter: https://twitter.com/IDMVienna
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/idmvienna/
LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/idmvienna/
Visit our website: http://www.idm.at/
Newsletter: http://bit.ly/38uqaVK
https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos?id=l2jvYPrun7M&part=id,snippet,contentDetails,statistics&key=AIzaSyAuacZl-IRz0fqVbaL1InRHT5Wnuj9Z7dI
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/K4Nq0m3HJmo/default.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/K4Nq0m3HJmo/mqdefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/K4Nq0m3HJmo/hqdefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/K4Nq0m3HJmo/sddefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/K4Nq0m3HJmo/maxresdefault.jpg
IDM Vienna
What is the role of #Ukraine for the future of East-Central #Europe, and vice versa? Being convinced that during the transnational Corona crisis #Europe needs more mutual understanding and passionate advocacy than ever before, the IDM team launched the initiative “What’s the matter, Europe?” and presents a collection of personal stories on Europe.

Making Europe visible - We observed that valuing the European Union has a lot to do with personal experiences. The memories from travels, an exchange study or friends and family members who live abroad can inspire us to believe in the advantages of a common Europe. We were curious about how people in our network feel about Europe on a very personal level. This is why the IDM team kicked off a thought process on Europe’s future. The idea was not only to commemorate the EU accession, but also to rekindle the European idea, which is now shaken by another severe crisis.

Time to listen and discuss - Europe cannot be improved by politicians only. We all must make up our minds and find out what matters to us. This initiative is a first step to an urgently needed discussion. European integration does not stop with the accession. The European Union challenges us with a broad variety of narratives and perspectives. In politics, this means that we need to discuss all interests and find a compromise. In daily life, it is our task to listen to the stories of our neighbors and to understand their points of view. The message of the Think Tank’s initiative is clear: Europe does not need a new story; we just need to listen well to the existing ones.

The stories are to be continued - The initiative is not finished by collecting statements till 12th of June, which was by the way, the day of Austria’s referendum to the EU accession in 1994. It takes every one of us to transform this enthusiasm into dialogue, cooperation and understanding to secure what maybe was taken too much for granted: a Union of peace, stability, prosperity and justice. The IDM team will use the questions and wishes raised by participants as inspiration for the further work in the region.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IDMVienna
Twitter: https://twitter.com/IDMVienna
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/idmvienna/
Visit our website: http://www.idm.at/
Newsletter: http://bit.ly/38uqaVK
https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos?id=P3AJfpGr3Bk&part=id,snippet,contentDetails,statistics&key=AIzaSyAuacZl-IRz0fqVbaL1InRHT5Wnuj9Z7dI
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5TA05CHg8Fc/default.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5TA05CHg8Fc/mqdefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5TA05CHg8Fc/hqdefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5TA05CHg8Fc/sddefault.jpg,https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5TA05CHg8Fc/maxresdefault.jpg
IDM Vienna
What matters to you in #Europe?

Participate in our #initiative!
How to:

1.
