The Day After – Towards a Greater European Council?
Yesterday EUCO followed the recommendation of the European Commission and granted Moldova and Ukraine candidate status.
This is an important political symbol and sends a strong signal of solidarity. However, the EU’s decision can only be seen as the first step for providing the necessary political, institutional and strategic answers to the changing geopolitical and security environment. It is clear that the enlargement process will not have any short-cuts and the EU-Western Balkans summit showed the lack of ambition among the member states.
Thus, what comes next? Ulrich Schneckener and Sebastian Schäffer wrote a Policy Paper for the day after. Reflecting on different proposals made by the French President Emmanuel Macron and others, they explore the concept of a Greater European Council (GEC) as a new way forward.
