Regional Perspectives on the war in Ukraine / Conference

International conference organised by the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM), the Institute of European Integration and Regional Studies at the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and the Center for the Study of Conflict & Peace at the University of Osnabrück.

Questions after the unjustified attack of the Russian Federation against Ukraine developed from “how could we let this happen” through “what can we do to help” to “when will it end”? As the war is ongoing for almost four months, three institutions from Chernivtsi, Osnabrück and Vienna brought together experts to discuss the war  in Ukraine as well as its implications for the wider Danube Region.

Welcome to the new website of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe

If you want to move forward, you have to stay mobile. Therefore, the IDM is now getting a new home in virtual space. On 1 July 2022, our new website www.idm.at went online. We are still working at full speed to improve it. For technical reasons, however, all old links will no longer work. We would therefore like to thank you for your understanding that there may be a few inconveniences during this transition period!

Visit us at the new digital home of the IDM!

Our current events, publications, podcasts and expertise are already available to you in the new design. We hope you will quickly get used to the new structure and are pleased with the improvements: Above all, the relaunch gives us more freedom and flexibility to provide attractive information about the target countries of our institute. A separate blog offers new opportunities to optimally communicate analyses and comments on important developments. Another highlight is the interactive map on the home page, behind which we continuously collect the latest expertise on the target countries. Current information on Ukraine can be found here. Discover the new online reader for our publications! From now on you can conveniently browse through the latest policy paper from our experts on our website or download the latest issue of Info Europa for later. We also make it easier for you to get involved in the region. In the future, IDM membership will only be a few clicks away.

Donau-Salon beim Europa-Forum Wachau 2022

  • Iryna Izarova, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Department for Legal Studies and International Relations UWK

Policy Paper: The Day After

The Day After – Towards a Greater European Council?

IDM Policy Paper 2/2022

Yesterday EUCO followed the recommendation of the European Commission and granted Moldova and Ukraine candidate status.

This is an important political symbol and sends a strong signal of solidarity. However, the EU’s decision can only be seen as the first step for providing the necessary political, institutional and strategic answers to the changing geopolitical and security environment. It is clear that the enlargement process will not have any short-cuts and the EU-Western Balkans summit showed the lack of ambition among the member states.

Thus, what comes next? Ulrich Schneckener and Sebastian Schäffer wrote a Policy Paper for the day after. Reflecting on different proposals made by the French President Emmanuel Macron and others, they explore the concept of a Greater European Council (GEC) as a new way forward.

IDM Short Insights 18: Europe heaves a sigh of relief

French voters went to the ballot on 24 April 2022 and re-elected president Emmanuel Macron. Preserving international dialogue, Europe can heave a sight of relief despite the uncertainty of the upcoming parliamentary election. From France, IDM research associate Emma Hontebeyrie gives an overview of the situation.

IDM Short Insights 17: Impact of the War in Ukraine on Georgia

The ongoing War in Ukraine has had a massive spill-over effect on neighbouring parts of Europe. Among the countries affected has been Georgia. IDM Research Assistant Jack Gill, who recently spent time in Tbilisi, gives an overview of how Georgia has been affected.
